Im trying to get a feel for what my new Inspiron 1520 can handle. So what types of games can my 8400m GS handle? I have it paired with 2gbs of ram and an Intel C2D T5250 (1.5Ghz/667Mhz FSB/2MB Cache). Thanks

World of Warcraft, Civilization Series, most Strategy Based Wargames, etc...

The 8400 GS is a modest step up from integrated graphics, but likely any current game you see used for benchmarking purposes will not be very playable if at all.

Space Invaders. But when something with more then 10 pixels comes on you may experience some slowdown.

On a serious note. on a low res with low settings it should be ok with *most* games. it really aint a gaming card though.. 8600GT at min.

I have a HP dv6500t with:
Intel Core 2 Duo t7300 (2.0ghz, 4mb l2 cache) - On single threaded apps, this processor shuts down one of the cores and overclocks the other. see pic - http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/5614/cpuz3ny6.jpg
2gb ddr2 667mhz ram
nvidia 8400m gs

It can play source engine games at 35fps with high settings (except for maybe water textures, cant remember), trillinear filtering, full HDR lighting, and 1280x800 resolution.

I also have Call of Duty 4 and the game recommends medium settings with 2x AA and 800x600 resolution. The AA doesn't really make the game look a whole lot better so I just turn it off for higher frame rate.

FEAR runs well at medium settings, no AA, and 1280x800 resolution.

Emulators, WoW, Sims, alot of the older games, and simple games like Bejeweled, Risk, etc. Forget anything that has high 3D graphics, like zen said, used for benchmarking tests like Oblivion or Bioshock.

I know someone who plays Crysis on an 8500GT apparently (re-read the previous word) quite well, as long as it's on low. Your 8400M GS is slower than that, and Crysis is all but out of the equation, but I agree with the above - anything '05 and before it should be fine with. Maybe even a few '06 games it should run. '07 games it will have a hard time with though.

I've heard of Crysis on low settings on low resolution is possible on an 8400M GS. You should be able to play current games if you don't mind turning the settings down low. Oblivion will run, my friend played it on a GeForce GO 7400 which is a step down from an 8400M GS, so you can probably get low with some medium on a Oblivion if you don't mind the draw distance being a bit low. Source engine games should fine, I played Counter-Strike: Source on a PCI GeForce4 at low-med settings at 1024x768 so you should be able to run any source games, like Portal, HL2 series, and Team Fortress 2.

A relative's old P4 with Intel graphics couldn't handle the latest Guitar Hero, and they didn't want me to spend too much on a gift, so I got them an 8400 as an upgrade. Along with the other games mentioned, that should work.

You won't get to play Crysis, The Witcher, or any more graphically intensive games at anything but very low resolution with that card, but you can always upgrade to a 9600 if your power supply can handle the extra amps on the 12 volt rail.

you can play all the need for speed games.
road rash would run perfectly!! call of duty -all the games(cod 4 mw would run @ low settings).i guess barring crysis you would be able to run most of the stuff.but don't expect too much from the 8400

My dell vostro 1500 with a 1.6 core 2 duo, 2gb ram, 8400m gs, and 7200rpm hard drive can play half life 2 at 1440x900 and it runs great. It also plays quake wars, COD2, GTA:SA, and team fortress well. Actually, COD2 plays the worst of them all. I wish I spent the extra $100 and got the 256mb 8600M GT

My dad's got the HP 6516TX with the exact same specs as your Dell 1520 ... 1.5 C2D, 2GB DDR2, 8400M GS........ on it i've played Doom 3, FEAR, Farcry, all the NFS games except Prostreet (but it sux anyways), COD4, HL2 and its 2 episodes and Racedriver GRID... played them all at high settings at 1024 res. Crysis runs fine at low settings on the same res.

So yeah, its not at all a crappy laptop you've got there. Unless of course you want to play Crysis at medium and beyond.

I have played Guitar Hero 3 at 1280x800 and except for some parts like boss battles with Tom Morello and Slash, it tends to run well enough. Of course with physics not activated and with no crowd.

I also player just today Left for Dead ( a 2008 game) at 1024x600 at a playable frame rate (I didn't measure the number, just the playing experience I mean) with no AA o AF, all on medium settings of shadows and model detail, but there are some various combinations I still didn't try.

I was also able to play Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (which has sources engine as well ) and it plays fairly smooth to shoot and all with some settings at high and a few at medium, no AA at 1024x600.

I am still testing games like Race Driver Grid, which I tried with the Vista Home Basic my notebook came with and it barely handled the introduction and animated menu. Now I will test it on XP Pro and see what happens, but I am not hopeless at all.

I was very curious about some Need for Speed games, like MOst Wanted ( I've lost the disc so for now, not possible ) But I pretty much doubt I can play NFS ProStreet due to all the details and how it needs to have details or it's just awful to play on it.

I still didn't try any RTS game, but I already see World in Conflict is just an impossible dream for it.

I must make it clear that my notebook specs are:

Intel Dual Core T2390 (1.8Ghz, 1Mb cache, 533mhs FSB), 2Gb RAM, HDD Western Digital 160Gb 5400rpm and of course Geforce 8400m gs 128Mb)

I suspect the T2390 can be the reason of some lack of frames in some games (some physics here and there) but I am still checking all about it.

NFS Most Wanted on 800x600 with mid detalization. That all truth.
The highest resolution or detalization cause slowing effect.
