Yo Everyone,
i'm new to the forums here and hope you guys could help me out with a new system build. Its about time for an upgrade from my Geforce Ti4200 + P4 System.

I'm looking to play games like crysis,HL2,TF2,Unreal,NFS Pro Street etc, preferably at high settings. Just having a few doubts about the parts before i buy them.

The system i had in mind was: Budget: AUD1300
CPU:Intel C2D E6750
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 8800GT (X2 Possibly in SLI mode)
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35 DS3R Or evGA nforce 680i/Other 680i motherboards (any recommendations?)
Memory: 2GB DDR2 800 Corsair XMS2 (i'm only looking to overclock slightly without too much use of complicated cooling systems)
Monitor:Already have a 17" monitor, looking to upgrade to a 22/24" next year, so i definitely need SLI right?
HD: Seagate SATAII 320GB
DVD Burner: From Old system (IDE cable, is that alright to use with the new motherboard?)
Case: No idea yet.

Just wondering, with the 680i motherboard, will it support the future penryn processors? As i've read, it appears that the 680i motherboard is pretty old skool and the 780i that will be coming soon has only an added PCI E 2.0 feature. Will that make a huge difference? Also, will this old hardware hold back 2X 8800GT ? Finally, will it be 'stupid' to run 2 8000GT in SLI on a 17" monitor till i upgrade?

asus maximus formula has pci 2.0 too. I have no idea whether 680i boards will fit penryn probably will is my guess (dont quote and flame on me this) -_-. I said guess. E6750 wont hold back 8800gt in sli. I believe 8800GT shows more performance increase in sli at lower res

I am looking at the same thing, going to my first Intel build since a PII. If you want SLi, go 680i chipset, if you will run one video card and wish to OC then the P35s score higher. I am looking at the highly rated eVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 mobo myself but then I just saw the MSI P6N Diamond.

The 680i chipset does support the current penryn cpus, according to nVidia. From what I have read, the 780i will not be much of an upgrade over 680i and will still use the 590 southbridge. Most SLi rigs show increased performance at higher resolutions, they actually score LOWER than a single card in 640x480. I am also getting a E6750 and what I am reading is that with two 8800GT in SLI, the CPU will be the bottleneck and you should OC to get BIG frame rate increases. THis is just what I have been researching tho, I have no actually experience.

Hmmm, okay, i was planning on playing @ around 1280X960 resolution (my 17" max resolution) so hopefully that would be alright with 2X 8800GT. Does motherboard's using old southbridge and other older components actually affect the performance of other new generation products?

i think the older southbridge just derives the feature sets you may expect from that board. It may also control one of the PCIe slots for full x16 support. I just read that the X38s may start showing up with 590 southbridges at some point since they will only have crossfire support at first
