O boy here i go again (flames are flying)- the new intel chips are out and 4ghz of quad core mania is burning up the apps - i guess amd is still at the marketing their "true...." i mean "native quad core" to slowski's?

One thing to point out the fsb333 or 1333bus chips are not as overclockable as a q6600 - which forces us (users) to buy the $1000 chip. With gpu prices falling and dual gpu cards out soon a shift from $700 gp and $300 cpu will go to $450 gpu carda and $1000 EE chips. So the stock should rise on lower cost productions and more high end chip sales.

I guess there is a de=tuend quad on the 1066? Ok IFB lets keep the party going since 7/17/06 for you guys that remeber the good old glory x2 days in may of 05 - don't worry you still find amd chips in emachines and packard bell!

Intels Reign is solid and proven, the new chips drop in intel mobos - no more stinky nvidia mobos - at least amd can sell us video cards.

Soon the next phase of intels plan will produce such superior cpu's that amd is ....well.... the wallmart cpu chip of choice.

2.87 fsb 333 on 450fsb will not be any faster the current q6600 at fsb400

i sure hope it runs fsb 500 - it kills me to put $1300, lucky my customers do not feel so. soar on

i am rooting for amd don't get me wrong even though i build almost all intel chip based systems - we all know with no amd we be buying $1500 q6600 not $300.

infact if amd had not stuck it too intel in 05-06, i am sure today, a q6600 would be in the $600-$800 range as was a 560J or 660 or 661 in 05-04

For a good overclock, you might need some high-speed DDR3. I'm going to wait for DDR3 to come down in price before I move to Penryn. By that time more apps should be optimized for SSE4 - can't wait to see encoding times on a 5 GHz overclocked (Assuming it will reach it with water, looking like it will as they're already hitting 4 on air.)

i have a ddr3 mobo - its a collectors item already

an asus blitz ddr3 can not wait to fire it up when the price off ddr3 hits $300 for fsb1600

its got that funky asus chip that turns the 16x bus into a dual 8 - i held on too it since the p35 mobos keep showing up as faster

i think you be limited to 4.6ghz and under with any cooling other then phase or vapor

Uh woah 4.6? I don't doubt it, but it's hard to believe.

Intel is indeed the top now, but the Phenom will absolutely dust it....is what I would like to say...

Uh woah 4.6? I don't doubt it, but it's hard to believe.

There are threads over at XS showing the QX6950 reaching ~4.6Ghz on air (Tuniq tower). That's just utterly insane. But as dragonsprayer pointed out, the FSB becomes an issue, so to get the maximum clockspeed you'll the extreme edition part with an unlocked multiplier.

you can project the top speed by the intial speed reports in many cases - most people will think i am dumb for this but the 965ee chip ran at 4.6, the first core 2 chips ran 4.1ghz just as p4

mid 4's is the wish list since 4ghz is easy on low volts

Intel has always been number one, except for the A64 tromping they got from 2003-2006. Nothing new here. AMD is plenty happy at number 2.
I dont believe AMD will ever be able to produce a faster processor than Intel. They just dont have the huge engineering recources that Intel has. AMD knows this, and thats why they are moving into other markets. AMD is in a huge transition period, they no longer will be just into cpu's.

As with most everything else, sounds like AMD is copying Intel again. As we all know, Intel's had their claws in many many other markets for a long time (anyone remember the Intel division that made the microscope and that audio recorder?). Intel does this primarily to reuse factories that can no longer support current CPU technologies, as chipsets, flash, etc. can use older process technologies and still remain competative. CPU ASPs are by far the best margins though. If AMD can't make a profit with the largest ASPs, how are they going to do it with parts with lower profit margins?
