well i need help i have an amd 4600+ socket 939 and everytime it loads windows it boots up and gets the bsod or it loads then freezes after i log in or it restarts, i am currently using an old 3500+ however it seems to be working fine so far. any ideas what the problem could be?

Could be the power supply, or the 4600 may be overheating.

say if i use windows xp and i just put the new cpu in would i have to reinstall/format for it to work?

bios upgrade - psu would not make a diffenece when cold

Yes your motherboard might not support the 4600+. Check your motherboard manufacturer's website for CPU support and perhaps you can sort the problem out with a BIOS update.
