Hi all. I'm a new poster (have read for a while though) so please be gentle! :)
I think i just about understand RAM timings and how they tie in with FSB etc. and I have a couple of questions...
I have Corsair XMS2 RAM thats registered to run at 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1V now according to CPU-Z its running at 5-5-5-18 one would assume for stability...

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/2483/cpuzramhb8.jpg

Would there be much benefit tightening the timings to 4-4-4-12 as with the 6000+ and its odd multiplier I'm going to drop to DDR2 375. Would there be much benefit in doing it? Ideally I'd like to keep the CPU stock (its about a month old and only an interim until I can get a Phenom) as its a retail boxed one, but if there is an easy OC to go with revised timings that will make a difference I'm all ears. Any suggestions?
Oh and the other question i have is about Cool'n'Quiet, I'm almost certain that it is enabled in BIOS but it doesn't throttle the CPU at all at idle?
I'll assume idiocy here and ask for help!
Thanks. :)

Tightening the timings does lead to better performance, but could cause instability with the system.Best way to figure it out is try different timings and test them each time you change them. This will ensure the tightest timings with the best system stability.Goodluck.

Thanks very much. I'll have a look at it tonight. The whole OCing thing is something I've never bothered with tonight...
But I'll have a bit of a play with my old system as well Skt754 3700+ :)
The only other query I had was if I dropped the multiplier to 14x & raised the FSB to 215 I'd get 3010MHz, but obviosuly the key being an even multiplier so would therefore be able to tighten the RAM timings to 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2 400MHz as opposed to DDR2 375. Any benefit? Or might I just as well bump the FSB and try and hit 3.2/3.3/3.4 or higher at 15x multi and tighten the RAM as well?

I have an X2 6000+ with PC2-6400 Patriot ram rated at 4-4-4-12. I am able to run the processor at 214 with a 15X multiplier (about 3.2ghz), ram timings at 4-4-4-12 at 400mhz and the system is completely stable with stock cooling. I have noticed a difference in performance after changing timings from 5-5-5-16. Not a terribly great difference, but noticeable. The only drawback is that the processor and chipset seem to run about 1-3c warmer on idle and load.

Was mucking around with the BIOS today on a work computer I've just bought (QX6850 :D) and was just having a look at that ram timings on that so I'd have an idea what I'm looking for...
had a look at the BIOS on my PC (Energy Star, can't seem to find the sub menu to change the timings.... :S)
Any ideas?

Press ctrl+F1 in the main page of the bios to get into the advanced chipset settings. That's what works on my mobo.
