How to get my optical drive to work on my hp laptop. does not recognize it.

I have not had any luck with my hp laptops. Both drives stopped working about the same time so I am figuring it is an update interference. I have restored them both. I have went into the registry and there are no upper or lower filters. I have also uninstalled the roxio I had on them, but still I have no luck. I can't uninstall the device because it is not listed and the microsoft fix it does nothing...

The device does not show up in my computer. I insert a disk and the light comes on and makes a noise as though it were loading but that is it.
