I saw this card

MSI NX8400GS-TD256E GeForce 8400GS Support up to 512M -256MB onboard

for $50 and I was wondering if it would be adequate to play call of duty 4 which recommends: Nvidia Geforce 7800

That is by far my most extensive draw on a vista machine I am building. What other cheap cards are up for the task?

no it would not be enough, not for good quality settings atleast. my 7800 is playable (with medium settings) with cod4 at 1680x1050.

You want at least 30fps not 1fps.

for one - stay away from MSI, and two - if you want to play games, get a gaming card.

What are your system specs?

Not at all, that card is okay for Call of Duty 1, from 2003. IT IS NOT A GAMING CARD.

The cheapest card worth buying right now is an x1950pro with rebate from newegg.com.

Look at the VGA charts.

Point well taken :hello:

I didn't tell the group the rest of my new build cause I already bothered the new build group with it. I got the answer I needed on the MSI NX8400GS- not in any system running modern games :)

My sytem build post is in: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] uty4-build

Is it generally accepted that the x1950pro is better than the XFX GeForce 8600 GTS for COD4? If so I'll change my build.

before anything check out the new ATI 3850 - it offers twice the performance of my 7950GT 512mb (which cost me 400 dollars :( :@)

What resolution do your sons want to game at? My 7600gs runs cod4 most settigns maxed fine at 1024x768. For budget I would consider a 8600gt. (under $100 budget) If you can spend around 120 consider a 7900gs, but it will not play games in dx10 but that might not be a problom if you build a new rig every other year. Dx10 hasn't really taken of yet. 7900gs will get more frames than the 8600gt, but cannot run dx10. If you can spend more money than about $250 will get you a 8800gt, one of the best video cards out.

Thanks so much for your comments. I've continued the thread over at: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] uty4-build based on my budget I'm getting:

Video Card - Sapphire HD3850 256mb $179

They'll have to play on whatever hardware I get them :) In any event it will be better than their PS2 :) Next upgrade I'll splurge for the 8800gt. :)

I think i looked at the same card on newegg, but I saw lots of bad comments on the 8400GS. I wouldnt recommend it.

Reply to Robosquirrel

the 8400gs sucks with games, i have one. its as hot as an 8600gt. stay away from this card.

Who says that you cant run CoD 4 on the 8400gs?If you hove a small monitor and are willing to sacrifice resolution for performance, you can run CoD 4 at 640x480 and everything on maximum and get highly playable framerates.I have a XFX GeForce 8400Gs 512 MB and it runs CoD 4 fine at the above settings with no lag and at stock speeds.

Yeah, you can run it @ 640 x 480 with all min. settings. I would suggest the HD 4850/30. If you're in a very tight budget, get the 9600GT / 4670. I just upgraded from my 8600GT to a 4850 and it left me gasping. WHAT a difference. Same system specs. I used to get 20fps on Mirrors edge with all setting to low. Now, I get a steady 60fps maxed out. Same with Crysis. I used to get All settings low, 800 x 600, noAA ~ 40 fps. Now I get 1440 x 900, All High, 2x AA ~ 45 fps.

+1, it runs on my 8400GS with the res set to 640 x 480 with all set to low, still pretty laggy though. Not a gaming card by any means.

man ur card is more powerfull than EN8400gs but i think u may not get full performance from it. by the way, whats the manufacturer of ur GPU ?? try to be with high end manufacturars. with ASUS's EN8400gs 512mb i can get more than from ur 9600GT, lol. for this u have to configure ur pc wisely :P. plz see my screenshorts in the following location :

Asus 8400GS Silent 512MB PCI Express HD-TV HDCP has fully onboard 512MB memory. its specification is here :
