Sorry if this is the dumbest question ever, but i am here to learn ;)

I have an opteron 180, 2.41Ghz, a8nsli deluxe mobo, stock cooler that the opty came with

About how much should i be able to oc it to?

Also, what does that new number mean? For example, lets say i get it to 2.65Ghz, which is 10% more than 2.41. Does this mean that my cpu is 10% faster in everything it does?

According to the quantum flux memory controller the opteron 180 is capable of 5.713Thz, yes you heard correctly Terra hertz.....and then we all woke up. On a serious note I would check out the AMD portion of the overclocking topic, but as far as performance, it isn't exactly linear I believe when you overclock. E.G if you overclock say 50% and you encoded a movie at 10 seconds, it wouldnt say take the movie to encode in 5 seconds. Then again I'm not exactly positive...

Unless you're running benchmarks, cpu performance gains are usually never linear.

If you're getting 100fps in some not cpu intensive game, Ocing the cpu 10% will probably bring 1fps gain, if any. However, if you're running Tri-SLI Ultras with a 1GHz Celeron, OCing the Celeron to 2GHz will probably give 100% boost in frames.

You can test it out yourself.

If I had an old opty with the rig that you had... i would go to the hardware store and get as much dry ice as you can (or where ever they sell that stuff) and make a custom cooler out of insulated material and.... well.... really not worth it.

I think you may get that sucker to 2.6 easily... maybe more. If you invest in a better cooler you may hit a bit more like 2.9, i'm talking completely stable. I've read of people going as high as 3.0 with opty but I dont forsee that with you. I had a 4600+ X2 at one time with the same mobo and got that sucker to complete 3dmark06 at 2.94 with thermalright xp-90 cooler. That was as good as it got for me.
