680i's don't suck. They are just as good as p35/x38 if not better

according to the Chinese site Expreview, nForce 780i is actually pretty much the same chip as 680i, but with a PCIe 2.0 bridge chip added to the board. There are differences in the layouts of the board though, so there might be more changes, but superficially speaking it doesn't like all that much.

Expreview has also tested an nForce 780i motherboard and compared it with both 680i and various Intel chipsets, and if the picture proof (below) isn't enough, the graphs tell us the same thing. 780i performs identical to 680i.

I am sure that with a BIOs update it will support the Penryns as I have a P35 and the last BIOs update included support for the Penryn.

I have heard though that NForce chipsets memory controller is a lot more inefficient than Intels chipsets are. But that does make sense as Intel would know their hardware better.

I think as well that in future chipsets Intel will be supporting SLI and Crossfire without the need for a NForce chipset or ATI chipset.
