When installing a Athlon XP 3600 processor in place of a Sempron 2200 the computer shuts down immediately. Initially it powered up, started the boot/display, then shut down. Now it doesn't show the boot but just shuts down. Is this a problem that I need to set some jumpers, flash the bios, or something else to get it to work? (I have a nice amount of silicon on a new heat sink/fan, so I don't think it's the heat issue... or is it?)

Your motherboard is socket 462 - supports - AMD® Athlon XP/ Athlon/Duron/ processor.
Doesnt support Athlon 64 or higher. I cant find a 3600+ that will be supported????
Highest Athlon XP was 3200+ - http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/TYPE-Athlon XP.html

3600+ Athlon 64 X2 socket AM2 1.9 1024 2
3600+ Athlon 64 X2 socket AM2 2.0 512 2
3600+ Mobile Sempron socket 754 2.2? 128 1
3600+ Mobile Sempron socket S1 2.0 256 1
3600+ Sempron socket AM2 2.0 256 1

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the CMOS clearing as MSI's tech support doc suggests.

I think it is compatible: Compatible Processors Duron, Athlon, Sempron, Athlon XP I wrongly spoke in that it is a 3200 XP, not a 64/3800.

But, my ram 2700 may be a problem as well as clocking the motherboard, which is 333 Do I need to try to change jumpers to get the motherboard to 400?

I also checked the list you sent, but didn't find my CPU (AXDA3200DKV3C AMD ATHLON XP 3200 + XP3200+ CPU S462) on it. They listed DKV4's but not the DKV3C. Any thoughts? Also, the CPU is a 'S'; the seller said it didn't make any difference, and it fit in the socket perfectly. Do you think that this could be a CPU that was 'converted' from something else to make money?

RE: axda3200dkv3c chips

There are a bunch of ebay vendors selling a bunch of chips with this number, all over the planet. And also selling AMD ATHLON XP 3200+ BARTON CPU PROCESSOR SOCKET A 462, and AMD Athlon XP Barton 2500+ Socket A - 3200+ capable.

I purchased one of these chips from an ebay vendor.

Although the label reads "axda3200dkv3c" the chip is identified by BIOS, AMD CPU Info, CPU-z, and Sandra, as an XP 2600+ with 256 L2 cache, cpuid o6a0.

Looking at the CPU-World.com description page my chip looks like the 2600, with traces showing on the top.

What I could learn from the AMD website is the 3200 runs at 333/400 not 266. And it was built with a Barton core not a Thoroughbred.

And AMD's number chart indicates the size of the cache and FSB to be as identified by the utilities I used.

I think these chips are relabeled.

Either somebody bought a bunch of used chips and relabeled. Or, These are "rejects" from a fab plant that were relabeled.

I sent a message about this model number to AMD customer service and to Ebay.

I just purchased one of these on eBay. Here is the text form the CPU label:

AXDA3200DKV3C Y86633510211
AQXDA 0343MPMW 1999 AMD

I couldn't get it to post in my mobo. I wonder if it's fake, or relabeled. The eBay description was for a 400 MHz FSB chip, but I got this instead. It's going back to the seller tomorrow.
