I've built many systems in the past but I have a problem with a new build.

MB - Intel DG33TLM updated w/latest BIOS (0297)
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6550
HD - WD Caviar SE WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
Optical - SAMSUNG 20X DVD Burner SATA Model SH-S203B
Memory - 2-512MB (1GB) Kingston DDR2 PC6400 Non-ECC

Nothing fancy here. It's a simple build.
The system won't see the hard drive at all. It locks up at boot on the Intel logo screen with no way into the BIOS setup. If I remove the hard drive, it boots to the optical drive - no problem.
The hard drive is good as I checked it in another system. The BIOS is set to IDE mode (default).

I can't figure it. Do I need to wait for another BIOS update? Is the hard drive incompatible with the ICH9 controller? Please help - thanks.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

I could be crazy (because it has been a while), but it seemed like I had to actually enable the SATA ports in my BIOS when I first built it.

I couldn't imagine that you would need a BIOS update for a hard drive.

I cleared the CMOS. I took the battery out and let it sit overnight then did a BIOS recovery.

The BIOS has 2 settings for this. "Config SATA as..." is set to IDE since the other 2 choices are RAID and AHCI which I'm not using since the HD doesn't support NCQ.

The other setting is "ATA/IDE" which is either Disabled, Legacy, or Native. Native is the default. I tried legacy with no success.
