Yes folks, even though most of you think it's a waste of silicon, Phenom is available in retail at several places.

Tiger Direct has the chip, MainGear has systems as does CyberPowerPC so it looks like AMD is keeping their promise to get Phenom in the channel first. I can't wait to see the HP BlackBird 02 with Phenom. I want water-cooling for my next box.

Wow that's way overpriced from a retailer.

Especially considering this isn't even an equally clocked part. It's the 2.2 GHz part.. and it's more expensive than the Q6600 that is at 2.4 GHz and performs better clock for clock.

I'm all for diversity in the market, I just fail to see how this will help sell. But hey who cares, Tiger already bought their tray so AMD has their money.

Compared to a VIA?

I have to wait because I want water cooling. HP will have it in the Blackbird and there is a chassis from coolitsystems.com that isn't available yet. Since I'm on 939, I can't as easily upgrade just the mobo and RAM without having even more parts sitting around. I promised I wouldn't do that anymore.

A little barb, huhn? Is VIA 13% slower per clock than C2Q? Funny thing is that The Tech Report benches have better numbers than Tom's or Anand all around. I hope someone will see what happens if you disable the L3.

Yeah, and I never plunged for the FX60. I would have but when I was considering it, they shot up in price. Maybe I'll buy one just so my system is worth more.

Don't get me wrong. I really want Phenom to be faster clock for clock than C2Q. I'm hoping B3 is.

Penryn can push clocks higher than AMD will be able to hope for on 65nm so the only hope there is be more efficient clock for clock. That being said, the current B2 offering of this Phenom is not a formidable match against a Q6600.

Let's see..

Phenom B2 v Q6600

Price? Q6600
Clock? Q6600
Performance per Clock? Q6600
TDP? Same

Gotta say the Q6600 wins this go around. I sincerely hope for some TRUE diversity in the CPU market that the B3 changes this.

for·mi·da·ble
–adjective
1. causing fear, apprehension, or dread: a formidable opponent.
2. of discouraging or awesome strength, size, difficulty, etc.; intimidating: a formidable problem.
3. arousing feelings of awe or admiration because of grandeur, strength, etc.
4. of great strength; forceful; powerful: formidable opposition to the proposal.

Phenom is most certainly not formidible. It needs another 15% clock for clock just to approach 'proportionate'

The Tech Report review used an ES Phenom (9900) and when they tried to overclock the 9600 it wasn't stable. Out of all those charts, it was the only one that kept up with the Q6600 in most of the benchmarks. The Phenom 9600 showed the same performance numbers as other tech sites have shown.

What if they trade wins of 5% over all benchmarks? That's what I hope.

If they were truly within 5% of each other on almost all benchmarks and some went to AMD and some went to Intel that would be good enough.

Not everyone overclocks so that would make it a fair fight for the most part.

I guess I could comment that in your zeal you actually misspelled a word you looked up, but I'll just say that all around we're talking 13% clock for clock( according to Tomz). That's not too shabby, and in my mind is formidable. And to add to the comment below this, I guess a cheap quad core is somewhere in my future.

Wow thats overpriced i can get a q6600 for cheaper lol.
Why they even bothered to put these things out is beyond me, if your going to make something to compete with intel either make it much cheaper or faster this is neither.
