How to take data off a computer with a unkwown password

How do I take files off a computer with a password I can't remember?
Can I remove the HDD and drag and drop them onto another computer?
I'm not as good with software as I am with hardware...

Remove the HD and install it on another computer as a slave drive.

And after that, write down all your passwords in a little notebook, or use Roboform.
