q6600 if you're willing to overclock, e6850 otherwise.

If you do a lot of video encoding, graphics rendering or audio edition go with q6600 anyway.

buy a PII pentium and use the money you saved to buy spelling lessons.

Now that's not very nice!

lol m1ddy...Q6000!! just about everything worth while will be multithreaded soon. e6850=6.0ghz bandwidth, q6600=9.6ghz bandwidth.
If you get a go stepping you can overclock to 3.0ghz no problems at all.
I have a crappy b3 and it does 3.0 easily. So overclock the e6850 to 3.4=6.8ghz banwidth or the q6000@3.0= 12 ghz bandwidth, to me it's a no brainer.

You could also check out this Xeon. My friend just got it and he's going to overclock it to 3.0 GHz as soon as he gets off BF2 :-D. I linked the clubit site because they are guaranteeing the G0 stepping.

Get a quad G0 stepping/revision and a P35 mobo.

How do you buy spelling lessons?

But yeah, I would go with the Q6600 as well. Or you can get a cheap C2D, overclock it, and get a Penryn early next year.
