Basically, considering someone who will be using windows XP for the next couple of years, and ignoring price, which would be better for games like Supreme Commander and C&C3?

Neither.

A $180 Radeon 3850 will be much better than either of those options.
If you have $220 to spend get a Radeon 3870, and if you have almost $300 to spend get a Geforce 8800 GT.
Of course, you'll have to wait until they're in stock. Sold out right now. :D

If you have to choose between these two bad-for-the-price cards, the 7950 GX2 would be the way to go... the 2900 GT is only as fast as a single 7950 GT, so the 7950 GX2 would likely do better, being a dual 7950.
But remember, a single Radeon 3850 is better than either of these options.

I would get the 3850. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 814129101. If you're looking for something in the price range of 150-180 dollars that will do you good.

Yes the 2900GT have been out for about 6 weeksish, and already its completly obselete. They need to drastically reduce the 2900 series' price, as one would be utterly mad to choose any of them over the 3800s or 8800GT.

As for the 7950GX2, the high-end 7 series cards have aged very poorly, with modern game benchmarks seeing the X1950pro performing better than a 7900GTX. The GX2 should perform well at higher res, but I dout its got much punch left.

I need to sleep. But cant as my 8800GT is arriving tomorrow. ZOMG early Christmas. Must distract self with Heroes...

Yeah get either the 3850, 3870 or 8800GT.

Whats your take on the 3850/3870 from a price/performance standpoint.
I mean to me a 8800gt isnt $80 better than the 3870 but is $40 a fair price /performance ratio on the 3850/3870?
Thanks Mactronix

I'm voting for the 8800 GT. There's a very good reason why it's out of stock - it's very good

Cleeve, how does your setup work? That is, 8800 GTX + 2900 XT + one monitor? Are you connecting both cards to the same monitor at the same time?

My take is that the 3850, 3870, and 8800 GT all have excellent performance/dollar ratios. They're all viable and recommended products.

aevm, I have both cards, but I only use one at a time. Seems I'm always swapping one out for the other though. :)

I read that the 3870 is very quiet, and the 8800 GT isn't. That may be important for the OP.

Thanks Cleeve, it makes sense now. I was wondering if there's some hacked driver out there that lets ATI and nVidia cards work together.
