SMOKE out of 2.5 HDD!!!?

Tried to hook up 2.5 HDD to my desktop computer. Rebooting couple of times to find the HDD in bios, smoke came out. Smelled like something burnt up.

Is the HDD FUBAR? What did I do wrong? (Is 2.5 inch laptop bot 12V? Says +5V 0.55A on the HDD)

How did you connect it to the desktop?

it was a mac hdd connected with an IDE 2.5 to 3.5 converter, the power into the converter is ide hdd psu cable

What was it sitting on? did it short out on something? how was it hooked up?
