it might be from purely mechanical phenomenon,
the way my apartment building creaks when the
sun comes out.

it also indicates some components inside the
power supply are being mechanically stressed.
without knowing more, it's hard to say if this
will lead to an eventual failure, for example
through fatigue in a part of an electrical
component.

It could be the fan. I had a new ps that ticked. I wacked it and it would stop for a while then start up. Returned it.

Hey, I've got an ultra that will whine every once in a while, and on mine, I took the fan guard off which helps it not happen so often. For some reason there seems to be some piece of plastic inside that rubs the fan every once in a while, but it runs great. Who knows.....I might take it out and pull that piece out to stop it once and for all.
