* Updated BIOS to newest version
* Tried another PSU (also 400w, but should be enough)
* Windows Update
* Updatet chipset drivers from Asus' webpages
* Installed AMD's cool&quiet driver
* Tried the ram one at a time
* Running memtest86+ on the ram in 9 hours without error
* Tried changing harddrives
* Reinstalled windows xp and vista multiple times
* Tried different display drivers (ati, omegadrivers and the one included in vista)
I Have checked the temperature and volt readings on the cpu.
Any tips what can be wrong, or how i can find out?
How many processes do you have running in Background. I do not know how you can check for Vista, but for XP, go to Run from the Start menu and type "msconfig". Then make sure Selective StartUp is selected and then go to tartUp tab on top.
What you will need to do is leave all MS stuff, graphic exe and AntiVirus/Firewall stuff. Apply, click OK and then Reboot. Once done rebooting you will see a popup screen about Slected StartUp, click on do not show. This should help with Starting up faster and also keep your resources free in the background.
Also you can restrict some proccesses from the Adminstrative Tools from your Control Panel. Below is a list of stuff you can disable and stop.
Automatic Updates
Windows Firewall
Windows Installer
Anything doing with Remote Connection, Workstation and Servers applications.
I do have a FX60 cpu that use to act like what your problem is. I have done what I put down here and my computer boots up faster and hardly uses 100% of resources any more. It seems that when AMD dual core cpu's start getting warm, they tend to use more of your computer resources. Also when this happens. do a Defrag of computer and if you have Ad-Adware SE spyware program, run it (since cooies do report back to owner of them).
Hope this helped you out some.

roadrunner: the temp was around 40 celsius, and the volts were like they should.. about 3.3, 5.0, 11.9
what do you mean by disable hardware accelleration?
yoosty: the selective startup would not be any use i guess, since i havent installed anything other than chipsetdrivers and display drivers. but i will try it anyway, thanks for the tips. the firewall and automatic updates are disabled.
Do a CTRL+ALT+Delete and tell us which processes are running with high CPU usage.
i have now about 53 processes running.. it's not one particular program that is using a lot of cpu but everything.. when the computer is "freezing" many programs use a lot.. in example winamp 30%, utorrent 20%, firefox 50%, and all together 100%

how old is the processor? have you overclocked it and had a bad result lately?
try running the same programs in safe mode. does it cause the same error?
That's an awful lot of usage going on there. I mean, I'm running firefox, and usage is 0. I started up winamp, playing music, and usuage is 0. But taskmanager shows 1-3 percent usage.
Not sure what is going on your system. Seems like its doing updates or trying.
We need clues from taskmanager. Are your Windows CD/DVD bootlegged? Some bootlegged media has built in viruses.
Does it do this after a fresh install or after a software install. Try running windows after a fresh install and let us know what happens. A software such as a antivirus or something might be the cause. If it does it with just windows then we have a much bigger unknown problem.
If task manager says CPU is being 100% utilized that means that in the processes that all 100% will be accounted for among the various processes.
it is according to the task manager..
here is a screenshot of the taskmanager after i ran a 3dmark03 test.. you can see the cpu suddenly jumped to 100% and then i got a fpsdrop that lasted 10-20 seconds, before it went back to normal.

but, as you say, it makes sense that it's a software related issue.. but it's strange that the problem occures in both xp and vista before i install any programs.
If it is indeed software and it happens before you install anything, could it be something on your asus cd? Try running the system without using the ASUS cd and just download drivers from the net if you need any. Although Windows update should find your drivers if you need any.
i think i found a error.. when anything that uses 3d it freezes... i turned on the visualization in winamp and cpu went 100%...
i guess the vga card and the mainboard don't work well together.. i have tried both the omega drivers and the newest ati.. shall try to find my old cd that came with the card and see if those drivers work..
