My computer freezes suddenly, using 100% cpu.

the problem occures in windows when surfin the internet etc or if i'm trying to run a game.

It happens in both Windows XP and Windows Vista :S

I have recently upgraded my computer with this hardware:

* AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+
* Asus M2N-X Plus mainboard
* Apacer 1024mb DDR2-800mhz (2x these running dual-channel)

This is my other hardware in the computer:

* NorthQ 400w PSU
* Samsung 250GB S-ATA
* WD 500GB S-ATA
* DVD-RW

I have tried this without any luck:

* Updated BIOS to newest version
* Tried another PSU (also 400w, but should be enough)
* Windows Update
* Updatet chipset drivers from Asus' webpages
* Installed AMD's cool&quiet driver
* Tried the ram one at a time
* Running memtest86+ on the ram in 9 hours without error
* Tried changing harddrives
* Reinstalled windows xp and vista multiple times
* Tried different display drivers (ati, omegadrivers and the one included in vista)

I Have checked the temperature and volt readings on the cpu.

Any tips what can be wrong, or how i can find out?

Two things to try.
1. Check device manager and see if the is any thing that is not installed properly.
2. Disable hardware acceleration.

How was the temps and the volts?

How many processes do you have running in Background. I do not know how you can check for Vista, but for XP, go to Run from the Start menu and type "msconfig". Then make sure Selective StartUp is selected and then go to tartUp tab on top.

What you will need to do is leave all MS stuff, graphic exe and AntiVirus/Firewall stuff. Apply, click OK and then Reboot. Once done rebooting you will see a popup screen about Slected StartUp, click on do not show. This should help with Starting up faster and also keep your resources free in the background.

Also you can restrict some proccesses from the Adminstrative Tools from your Control Panel. Below is a list of stuff you can disable and stop.

Automatic Updates
Windows Firewall
Windows Installer
Anything doing with Remote Connection, Workstation and Servers applications.

I do have a FX60 cpu that use to act like what your problem is. I have done what I put down here and my computer boots up faster and hardly uses 100% of resources any more. It seems that when AMD dual core cpu's start getting warm, they tend to use more of your computer resources. Also when this happens. do a Defrag of computer and if you have Ad-Adware SE spyware program, run it (since cooies do report back to owner of them).

Hope this helped you out some.

Do a CTRL+ALT+Delete and tell us which processes are running with high CPU usage.

roadrunner: the temp was around 40 celsius, and the volts were like they should.. about 3.3, 5.0, 11.9

what do you mean by disable hardware accelleration?

yoosty: the selective startup would not be any use i guess, since i havent installed anything other than chipsetdrivers and display drivers. but i will try it anyway, thanks for the tips. the firewall and automatic updates are disabled.

i have now about 53 processes running.. it's not one particular program that is using a lot of cpu but everything.. when the computer is "freezing" many programs use a lot.. in example winamp 30%, utorrent 20%, firefox 50%, and all together 100%

Reply to juhu

If FireFox is using 50% that means is using an entire core. That may be your issue there.

Display setting/ Advanced settings/ Troubleshoot/ Disable hardware acceleration.

how old is the processor? have you overclocked it and had a bad result lately?
try running the same programs in safe mode. does it cause the same error?

Reply to frozenlead

Technology Coordinator: get the same problem if not firefox installed also, then its other apps.. it was just an example..

frozenlead: the cpu is brand new, got it 3 days ago.. never tried to overclock.

roadrunner: "your current display driver does not allow changes to be made to hardware accelleration settings"

Device manager showing anything not installed properly?

Reply to roadrunner197069

no everything is fine.. have tried both the drivers on the CD that came with the motherboard and the updated drivers from Asus' webpage..

Reply to juhu

Has firefox been updated?

Click on:

help>check for updates

That's an awful lot of usage going on there. I mean, I'm running firefox, and usage is 0. I started up winamp, playing music, and usuage is 0. But taskmanager shows 1-3 percent usage.

Not sure what is going on your system. Seems like its doing updates or trying. :lol:

According to what is the CPU usage 100%.

I would say 99% of the time that task manager says CPU usage is 100% it is a software related issue. At least from my experience.

If task manager says CPU is being 100% utilized that means that in the processes that all 100% will be accounted for among the various processes.

Reply to TechnologyCoordinator

We need clues from taskmanager. Are your Windows CD/DVD bootlegged? Some bootlegged media has built in viruses.

Does it do this after a fresh install or after a software install. Try running windows after a fresh install and let us know what happens. A software such as a antivirus or something might be the cause. If it does it with just windows then we have a much bigger unknown problem.

it is according to the task manager..

here is a screenshot of the taskmanager after i ran a 3dmark03 test.. you can see the cpu suddenly jumped to 100% and then i got a fpsdrop that lasted 10-20 seconds, before it went back to normal.

but, as you say, it makes sense that it's a software related issue.. but it's strange that the problem occures in both xp and vista before i install any programs.

me to.. feels like i have tried everything.. i shall try to boot in safemode etc.

thanks for the suggestions everyone that have replied, and hopefully i will figure it out soon..

If it is indeed software and it happens before you install anything, could it be something on your asus cd? Try running the system without using the ASUS cd and just download drivers from the net if you need any. Although Windows update should find your drivers if you need any.

have already tried that.. and also used windows update.. only a new SATA driver was found there...

Reply to juhu

you run windows, enough said.

Windows is not really a operating system. Its a system operator.

hahaha

i think i found a error.. when anything that uses 3d it freezes... i turned on the visualization in winamp and cpu went 100%...

i guess the vga card and the mainboard don't work well together.. i have tried both the omega drivers and the newest ati.. shall try to find my old cd that came with the card and see if those drivers work..

Reply to juhu

Do you have onboard and a seperate card?

Reply to roadrunner197069

Does the event viewer show any indications of problems? (applications/system)

i'm trying to download a older catalyst driver, and shall try that.

Reply to juhu

grr, same problem with older driver (catalyst 7.8) and the standard driver included in vista.. think i'm going to get another vga card to test with

Reply to juhu

Please screenshot the processes tab with all processes showing, please organize by CPU usage first.

Thanks.

i found this.. looks like more have the same error with that vga card:

Reply to roadrunner197069
