I'm thinking about getting a Plasma Tv, but I am reading on the internet
about burn-in problems.
Can someone explain to me if the yare bad as they say.
I watch sports and I feel if I get me a plasma I would have to cut down on
my sport watching.
I hear that the score ticker will be burned in if I leave it on for the full
game (any game basketball or football).
I noticed last night while watching King of Queens that CBS has there logo
on the bottom right corner during the whole show except for commercials will
this be bad also. I've notice this also on any of the Starz channels. Any
info on Burn-in. Is it not bad as they say and I worrying for nothing. I
really want a plasma Tv but feel that this burn-in will be a deciding
factor.

For the better brand name plasmas, burn-in for regular TV viewing is
not a problem. Panasonic claims for their current generation of plasmas
(7UY commercial, P*50/500 series consumer) to have the same resistance
to burn-in as a direct view CRT TV. I have never read of anyone getting
a score ticker burn-in from watching one game, even on the cheap
plasmas. The bigger danger is from PC gaming for hours and days on end
and watching only 4:3 pillarboxed SD shows or letterboxed movies. Even
the worse plasmas are not apparently any more sensitive to burn-in than
rear projection CRT TVs which people have been using for many years.
For someone who is planning to use their HD TV almost entirely for
gaming, an LCD TV is the better choice among the 2 flat panel
technologies. Otherwise, plasma is the better choice in general as it
has better contrast, viewing angle, and picture quality for watching
movies and TV.
The key to preventing plasma burn-in is to mix up the material and
stretch if necessary to fill the screen for long sessions of 4:3 shows
for the first 50 to 100 hours of use. Plasmas are the most sensitive to
burn-in the first 100 hours or so of use. The stupid network logos are
not much of an issue so long as you watch more than one network. The
black bars for the unused part of the screen are the bigger problem. I
have had my plasma for close to 5 months now without a hint of burn-in
or image retention.

Hi Daniel
I guess my question is why do you want a plasma HDTV ?
In simple terms, the plasma picture resolution is not as defined as a
CRT, thin LCD or LCD/DLP rear projection HDTV models. In other words
plasma, looks best from a logner viewing distance which is why they
only come in larger sizes. Plus I find it rather a strong message
concerning the state of the plasma TV industry in general that SONY has
decided to abandon the plasma technology as of next year.
I recommend for price/performance to purchase either a 34" CRT or a 42"
rear projection LCD or DLP ( 16:9 HDTV of course). Stay away from the
inferior, expensive
but 'sexy' emotional thin screen HDTV purchases for now ( yes, that
includes plasma ).
More importantly, stay away from any incarnation of EDTV even if the
salesperson claims that EDTV is cheaper and almost as good as HDTV.
The simple fact is that EDTV is not HDTV and the salesperson
won't be suffering from your mistake for years , but you will.

I use directv and most of the 4.3 pictures have a grey sidebar instead of
black which reduces the burnin problem also.
