Wow...just wow. Is it really newegg's policy to raise it $50 just because it's low on demand and high in supply? You can get a frekin 8800GT for that price! I'm losing respect for newegg...

You've got to think like a business. If I was newegg, I wouldn't really care about the people and just want to get a better price.

As a consumer, I would like a place that cares about the consumer and has a low price, but that won't happen.

Its all about supply and demand guys. They do this to deter the masses and it allows for the people who really want the card the most to get it and the ones who are willing to wait for the price to drop back down to wait for the supply to rise again. Its just economics guys...same reason is to why the 8800GT is so high right now. If you are going to argue that the 8800GT started at that price remember that price...remember that the 8800GT was only sent out with about 40,000 or so in supply and the 3870 was much higher than that and performed slightly lower. All this means is that they didnt expect demand for the product to be as high as it was, and thus when they were released for msrp were overloaded with people who wanted them. Dont hate AMD or Newegg, hate economics! Hope this helps.

Yes, supply and demand since no more 8800GT in stock so 3870 goes high and back when new 8800GT is back, just that simple.

Yes I agree on the supply and demand stuff, but why not start at $269 in the first place so people like me don't get ticked off when the price jumps? It was just like with the Q6600 at newegg. I clicked checkout when the price was at ~310, but on the next page, it became $340! I hate it when newegg does this.

The reason for the price jump now is a combination of there not being any supply of both the 8800 gt's and a low supply of 3870's. The reason for why they did not originally set the price higher was because they simply did not know or understand that there would be such demand for both cards and especially the 3870, which was suppose to be able to ship enough units to meet demand, but it didnt because of the lack of the 8800GT. Thus causing a buying rush for people who didnt want to wait and now they much raise to price to slow rush down.

Damn, did wait in front of your pc clicking the refresh button every second to get it? :kaola:

I hope the prices fall around Christmas, I want to build a midrange pc.

@3Ball

Thanks, I get that part now. However I'm still ticked that the price goes up so quickly, not just the 3870 tho.

Its frustrating but what realy gets under my skin is I just built a new machine and I could have saved almost 200$ if I waited a week for all these holiday sales.. I didnt think the holidays affected PC hardware.

But about Newegg, yea it sucks, but this is life. Neweggs customer service is second to none, So I still shop there, Even if the price is 10$ more than somewhere else.

I decided not to buy prior to January 15th. In fact, I might wait until after I get a 780G hybrid Crossfire board and an X2 5000+ or above (thinking of the X2 6400+). I wanted an X3870 now, but they just aren't at MSRP.

On the Nvidia side, I recall reading that Nvidia expected the 8800GT to drop to around $200 in the 1st quarter of 2008. It's just supply and demand right now, and I don't think it's all Newegg's fault. The card manufacturer's raise prices too.

I just hope that ATI makes so much money this quarter that they bail AMD out. One AMD suit claimed that the processor division will bring them a profit 4th quarter, but Phenom's not that great. Moving all the X2's will probably boost profit, as they'll still be quite good on the 790FX boards.

Can't wait for 45nm Phenoms, and for R700.

Newegg always starts low on the prices and raises them over the first 2 days of sales they did it with the 2900xt too. I think it i s to hook the first lot who tell their friends to buy from newegg and then they up it when the later buyers come in.

Hey! The prices finally dropped!
I'm glad that newegg dropped the prices accordingly when Amd announced it's price drop. Still, it's $50 more than what it should be. Grrr....

Does anyone know, or at least have an educated guess as to when the prices of the 3850/3870 are likely to settle down to their MSRP's?

One suggestion for someone who can't wait is to take a chance on Amazon. If the price drops within 30 days they'll pricematch for you. It's a bit of a secret apparently but I got them to match my GPS 3 times as the price plummeted last month.

The price will only settle when demand becomes lower and supply becomes high. That's not saying much eh? :)

I'm hoping it'll drop before Christmas, but I'm sure it'll go down by February, after all that's when all the 8series refresh and 9series are out.

They will lower prices around Christmas to grab more sales. Usually within the week before, and a few days after. Same will happen almost everywhere. ATI/AMD is definitely not responsible for the current price, thats just newegg.com trying to slow the selling down enough for more people to get them. The 3870 has been almost constantly out of stock since it launched, same as the 8800gt.

But around January the price should drop on a lot of things, especially the hd2000 series cards. Amusing is the fact that this has completely overshadowed the fact that the 1gb version of the 2900xt is now on newegg.

Thanks guys.

I'm building a new PC for my boy for Christmas and was thinking X1950Pro 256/512 but with a ~$200 budget some flavor of the 38X0 (if available) would be a more preferable choice.
