Hello,

I would like to see a list of which hidden files and directories there are in Windows 7, ie the ones that the actual OS, or the by Microsoft with the OS bundled programs such as Mediaplayer, writes to the disk as hidden.

Here are the ones I know so far:
$Recycle.Bin
AlbumArt*.jpg
desktop.ini
Folder.jpg
hiberfil.sys
System Volume Information
pagefile.sys
Thumbs.db

Which other ones are there? Are for example all .sys files automatically hidden?

Or does someone know of an easy way to find out which ones they are, for example by looking in the registry?

There is a difference between hidden files like the ones that are in your list that can easily be viewed by selecting view hidden files under tools options in Explorer and files and folders that are invisible to Windows explorer such as *.PIF.

Most Windows operating files are in folders labeled with a $, which are not visible in windows. You might try using the cmd prompt (DOS) to see if you can find more $folders and $files.

I'm actually not looking for a list of hidden files that I have on my computer right now. I want to know which hidden files that exists. This is because I want to have a backup script that does not copy any of the hidden files, not even the ones that might occur in the future.

You can not be really sure that every hidden file is an operating system file. The "hidden" feature is just an option that any user or program could set on any file.

However, if you want to know all hidden files on a certain partition, run this from the command prompt:

dir C:\ /ah-d /s /b /p
