The Everex gPC is a 200$ computer that comes with Linux instead of Windows.

You can find its details here:

http://www.everex.com/

I'm going to buy/build a computer for my grandmother and I think this machine would be ideal. At first I was considering a Mac Mini but for what she's going to use it for (basically email and browsing) I think a mini would be overkill, and this gPC looks just fine for that.

My question is, if you take shipping costs into consideration, would it be possible to build a pc from scratch for 200$ that would outperform this gPC? If I built it myself, I would still put Linux on there, to keep costs down, so the fact that it does not come with Windows is not an issue.

The big selling point they're trying to emphasize with this thing is the software, and I'm much more interested in if the hardware is a good deal or not. And what better place to ask about low-cost do-it-yourself setups than General Homebuilt?

I just read the first post there:

"For our purposes a system is comprised of: Case, Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Graphics Card and a HDD."

its missing PSU, keyboard, speakers, mouse...

Better quality on most components and a slightly faster machine. PSU is cheap, but so is the one in the Everex(I cracked one open at Walmart). This is not such a concern on such a basic machine.

You could actually download and install gOS. It seems to be pretty solid, and after all it is Ubuntu underneath. Something tells me it will catch on even if the PC's do not. If your grandmother is more used to Windows, PCLinuxOS 2007 might be a better choice, and it will run just fine on the above hardware guaranteed. With the exception of 1gb ram, and a 100gb HD, I am typing this on the same machine(my internet box).

Forgot mouse and KB.
