Expansion exterior drive for Vista

Ive a quesion, wanted to use my Seagate exterior expansion drive as a backup hard drive for my Vista Home Premium. My Vistas about 4 years old, trying to prolong life of pc, by using a exterior hard drive to bear some of the wear. Is it possible, and if so, is there a specific way to adapt it for this purpose ?

Using an external drive to hold data will not make the PC last longer. You can use it as a backup drive though, just run the windows backup program and save the data to the drive.
