Help windows media player I am fed up

Hello,
I give up have been trying to burn a cd in Windows Media player I have windows XP-it says not recognizing the CD-- I have waisted my money on all brands any suggestions

Can you write to a CD using XP's Write to CD function (or any other burning software other than Media Player?

Use FreeBurner or VLC or Realplayer(the free one) or Media Player Classic Home Cinema, or...

I like MPCHC myself, which is very slim and based on the oldWMP 8 or 9 code.
