I'm thinking of upgrading my Athlon 64 X2 5000+ BE. I have been looking at the Phenom 9600 Black Edition but I have read reviews that say it's not compatible with vista or that users have stability problems. I've also heard that SP1 fixes these problems. TLB bug? What say you experts of overclocking? Anyone using the Phenom with Vista x64 mind sharing your experience?

The Phenom 9750 and 9850 are out. Anything with the 9x50 means it's the B3 stepping with the TLB fixed. Performance clock for clock between the B2 and the B3 is exactly the same, however there are reports that the B3 is better at OCing.

Your choice.

Thanks, that seems like good info. But I'm asking specifically for info on the 9600 Black Edition when used with Vista x64. Just wondering if the rumors of incompatibility are true...

You do know the 5000BE overclocked around 6000+ to 6400+ will be far FASTER then then 9850 much less the 9600 right? And you also know the 9600 BE is NOT overclockable or maybe to .1ghz max? The 9850 Black edition would be better, but not really know how far it can (from 2.6ghz to 2.8ghz?)

You can OC the 9600 non BE to 2.59 and it's stable.  Ran it for a week at that setting then turned it down.  I couldn't get it past 2.59 though but I'm not a serious OC.  At 2.6 and above the computer wouldn't boot.

The worst part of my Vista 64 experience is having to listen to all of the individuals who apparently feel it's their 'Grand Mission In Life' to tell me about all of the things that (supposedly) don't work, when it *does* work.

Well im running a 9600 BE with vista 64 Home pre. and have had no problems with it at all. I overclocked it to 2.4 from 2.3(by changing the Muti. from 11.5 to 12) and it has been running fine for about a day now. This is the first time I have overclocked anything and I dont know about the Vcore. right now its at 1.25 and I don't want to put it too high. But if I set the speed too high with not enough Vcore it wont boot. I want to see how high I can get it to OC but I dont want to burn it up. What is a good way for OC it? Keep the frec. at 200Mhz and change the Muti. or up the frec. and keep the muti. the same? And what does the HT link at 1.8Ghz do? Any help would be great.

Dont go for AMD Phenom just yet..
Theres a big bug, its a TBL runtime error and you get massive hang times, degrades PC performance up to 20% so until this bug is fixed, theyre sheeeet.
Why not go for the 6000+ or 6400+?

This bug was fixed a couple months ago with the new stepping.

my phenom has generally been alright *touch wood*.
im running it with vista 64bit and its fine..recently had a BIOS update to fix the TLB bug however have chosen not to enable it, the reason being the 20% performance penalty. starting to overclock now so i will see how that goes.

Pure FUD, noone outside of AMDs test labs ever got the TLB bug to hit.

i am running the 9600 BE w/ vista ultimate x64. SP1

NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!!

everything is super stable. I have run tests also and taxed out my cpu w/ all 4 cores at 100% load and everything was fine. I ran this test for 4 hours. and everything came back okay.

I used the amd overdrive util for the test.

there is absolutely no problem with it. I have the MA790FX-DS5 board from gigabyte. I updated the bios on it and everything is butter.
