G'day , thanks in advance to any one who can help me out. A couple of days ago I installed another hdd, a 1 tg samsung. The fourth hdd for the pc, but the only 1tb.. When I go into computer management -storage devices it shows up as one hdd single partition, with one drive letter.
But when I go into "my computer" there are two images of the 1tb hard drive , and they are labled with different drive letters!. When I transferr files into the drive letter that shown in storage devices , the images both show that they are filling by the same amount.
It is the only 1 tb hdd in the machine so there is no confusion as to where the files where being put.

The system has a dual boot setup , and the 1 tb hdd and it "shadow" show in both operating systems !

any help would be appreciated ,

cheers Greg

So the alternate drive letter does not show up in Drive Management? So did you map a second path tot he same drive? What OS/SP are u on? strange indeed -J

In the "system" control panel, find the drive again and right-click on the only partition there, and there will be an option to add/remove drive letters to that disk. When the new window pops up, make sure there aren't two letters being assigned to it here.

Also, from a command prompt type "subst" and see if somehow the old DOS subsystem has aliased one drive to the other for some reason.

G'day, thanks for your response. i am using Windows xp and vista 64 in a dual bit configuration.

The extra drive letter does not show up in disk managedment. I checked the partion and there is only one letter allocated for the hdd.

I may have mapped a second path , but wouldn't know what to look for , or how to check!

BEcause it shows in both os I suspect it is in the Dos stuff , but wouldn't know where or what to look for! How does aliasing work ?

It doesn't appear to inhibit any functionality but I would like to fix it .

Any help is greatly appreciated ,

cheers Greg

That is really wierd. I bet that Xp assigned one set of letter and Vista an other and now because bo OS's are seeing both sets of letters and getting confused. I would worry about haveing soem write problems if this goes on too long. have to tested the drives I/O times and are they consistent with what ud expect for type of drive?

G'day, I went and checked and xp and vista to label a coupleof drives differently, should i attemp to make them the same for both os's?

Whilst the Itb is half full , whats on there is off no consequence , is it worth eraseing the disk and physically disconeccting it , then reinstalling it , initializing it and reformating?

Thanks for your help, cheers Greg

Yeah if they are cross labeled that would make sense to correct that... Vista doesn't mind booting from other than C. XP will but it will "fuss" more... id say thry to chenge letters on vista to match what xp wants.

Dont format I'm just saying I wouldnt let it go on too long...
