So heres the issue,

DuOrb + OCZ Thermal Paste + 8800GTS G92 = Bad Idea

Max temp with this card while playing Crysis... A ridiculous 67 C

(card is not overclocked except from factory)

Heres the card.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Heres the heatsink.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Heres the grease.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

The Culprit.....I think its the grease...

I used the same grease on my cpu, which is a E3110 OC'ed to 4.2 GHz, idles at 33 C.

Cooler on the CPU is a TRUE.

BTW, my case is a Antec 900 with all fans on high.

Bad Cooler?

Bad Grease?

Needs a re-seat?

Side Case Fan Blowing on VGA?

What do you guys think?

I'm kind of disappointed with the cooler. I don't want to use the HR cooler because its beyond ugly and weighs to much.

I'm running an EVGA 8800GT with the DuOrb and my temps don't go above 50 regardless of whether I'm playing Crysis/GoW/WoW/etc.

I used AS5 on my GPU and have not had any issues arise since installing it 2 months ago except for the gradually accumulating dust. Try re-seating and cleaning all the old paste off and try again maybe

8800GTs and GTSs are rated up to 100C. As long as it's under 80C you're good, especially with that case or any case with good airflow. BTW I dropped my max temps on my 8800GT 512MB from 78C to 69C with a slot fan installed right below it.

I wouldn't have a problem running it that high, but around 76-78 C it starts to glitch on me and even shut the computer down possibly.

I might RMA the cooler and use the zalman one, or maybe something else.

Any suggestions on a cooler?

They just don't need coolers if you have good airflow in your case. If your card is causing system instability under 80C then something else is going on or your card is a lemon.

Ill try it tonight. I am going to run Crysis for a few, then check temps. Ill swap coolers and see what happens. I stil might think its the grease. I have high idle temps on my cpu also.

UPDATE:

I switched back to the stock cooler. After running Crysis max temp was 54 C while OC'ed. Damn. HUGE HUGE difference. Advice for everyone, the stock cooler is by far the best.

I really thought the G92 GTS really didn't need an after market cooler like the 8800GT did. Oh well at least your happy now.

Stock cooling was always more than enough for the 8800GTS.
April 11, 2008 2:01:22 AM

but after market cooling is a must for 8800GT as the fan gets so annoying along with low cooling performance!!!
April 11, 2008 5:18:04 AM

Not really anymore. The older 8800GT's stock fan was very loud and annoying, but the newer larger fan of the 8800GT is now much quieter, about as loud as the HD3870. It still runs a little hot though.

Agreed. If you have poor, case, airflow and you OC then the 70-80C GPU temp would have a bigger effect on your case temps. I run my 8800GT fan at 70% during gaming. 4-6 hours never gets above 82C. I did install a PCI slot fan below it and now it stays below 76C. Not bad for $9.99 and no modifications.

Is their a setting in Rivatuner to turn up fan speed while a gaming application is running?

I have spent a little time looking for like a automatic setting, haven't seen one yet.

Any advice anyone?

lol, there's an excellent search engine that apparently nobody uses. It's called "Google". ;)

Sticky Google if you ask me.
