I have a Western Digital hard drive that is pre-formatted to FAT 32. I am trying to backup my computer and am getting the dreaded 4gb backup limit. A tech says to got to windows my computer western digital and format. However, when I do that I am getting an error message "windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities and then try reformating the drive. Nothing is open except my computer.

Try doing it in Control Panel>Administative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management.

If it's your OS drive, you can't format it inside windows.

If you have an XP disc, you can use the convert command, in the repair console, to change the drive to NTFS.
