The 3870s are back in stock. but they are all $40-50 higher. Amazon has a PNY 8800GT in stock for $250, but the 3870, at newegg is $270. 2 weeks ago the 3870 was $220.

After reading all the reviews, $220 for the 3870 was about right. If i had to buy one now just on price alone it will be the PNY 8800GT.

I am at the limit of my power supply now, I am probably better off with an 8800GT anyways.

I reall want and external exhaust fan on my card. I would live with the higher power consumption. I have a very small box, so i want to get as much heat out of my box as possible.

Wait for price to settle on the 3870 or not?

It all depends on how hard up you are right now for a graphics upgrade. Both the 8800GT and 3870 have shallow distro channels at the moment. Until enough stock gets in the channels to keep up with demand, expect some profiteering to occur on limited supply stocks (you know, economics and all). Most people are projecting late January/early February before things start to settle down a bit.

If you can wait until after the Christmas rush (maybe, ask for the money to buy a new card instead of the new card right away if you are looking at a present) then you will probably get more value for your money. If you are hard up for an upgrade right now, then grit your teeth and buy.

Even some of the 3850s have moved up from $180 to $210 at NewEgg.

If you can't wait you really don't have a choice.
If you can wait - don't reward retailers for jacking the prices upwards.

I am not in such a hurry, i was wondering if others thought the price would settle after Christmas. At $270 the 3870 is over priced. If i can wait until the nvidia 9xxx and/or the 3870 2x comes out, the price of the 3870 i want should come down a bunch.

I was going to upgrade my video now and upgrade to an Intel E6550 later, but i think i will go with the CPU now and video after new years.

Thanks
