My computer wont recognize anything i put in my usb port

Hello,
My computer no longer recognizes my ipod if it is plugged into the usb port. It says to install driver device. I tried to plug my cell phone into the same port (which I have successfully done in the past) and it does not work anymore either. Suggestions?
