Just set up a computer with P5K-E, E8400 (OEM), Freezer Pro-7....

Installed CoreTemp 0.97.1, the temps at idle are 49,45C. Why so high with no OC? I felt around the heat sink and the surrounding area, it is not even warm to the touch.

CoreTemp: Idle: 49,45
PC Probe: Idle: CPU=21, MB=34

I am not convinced that CoreTemp is reporting the accurate temps to this CPU. No BIOS setting was changed, Q-Fan enabled.

I have another PC: P5E-WS, Q6600-G0@2.88Ghz, Zalmans 9700NT.
CoreTemp: Idle: 35,36,35,35
PC Probe: Idle: CPU=27, MB=38

If you don't think that temperature is correct, go into BIOS and see the temp from there. It should be accurate. If the heatsink is cold, maybe the heat just isn't conducting. Did you apply thermal compound?

Check ASUS support site for P5K-E for latest BIOS and any fix for temp sensor issues.

I just OC the E8400 to 3.3 GHz.

Running Prime95 for an hour, PC Probe reports these numbers:
Vcore: 1.13V
CPU temp: 40-44C
MB temp: 37-38C
CPU fan: 1,268-1,520 RPM (Freezer Pro 7)

I ran Prime95 in the PC with Q6600-G0@2.88Ghz for 50 minutes:
Vcore: 1.16-1.17V
CPU temp: 38-42C
MB temp: 38-39C
CPU fan: 1,750-2,000 RPM (Zalmans 9700NT)

I am now quite sure that the temp of my E8400 is OK. CoreTemp does not report the proper temps because of the wrong TjMax value. Also, the CPU voltage is low enough that I should not lower it any further.

mis33, if you'd like to know how to properly test, calibrate and monitor your temps, then as Dunkel has suggested, please read the Core 2 Quad and Duo Temperature Guide: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] ture-guide

The main difference between CoreTemp and RealTemp is the TJmax.

Since TJmax in CoreTemp is 105C and in RealTemp is 95C, the difference in core CPU temp is exactly 10C.

The main question is what is the real TJmax for E8400....

Try the calibration procedure in the Temp Guide and see for yourself.

I do not have the time to try the calibration procedure.

I am setting up this PC for a friend and she is picking it up in a few hours. She is quite PC illiterate so I would like to set up a worry-free PC. This is why I only OC to 3.3 GHz. I am now making a recovery DVD for her using Drive Image.

so u guys are saying...
the temp in Core Temp is off by 10C???

I have a e3110 im hitting 50/49 STOCK intel HSF with no OC...
?
so im actually at 40/39C ?

This depends on the CPU.

I think it's OK for Q6600 but not the E8400 (E3110).
