Ive messed about with ocing my old amd 3500+ but never really managed to get more than about 300Mhz from it.

i did a bit of reading about intels yesterday and decided to try and oc my new system (see in sig)

i decided i'd be careful so i set myself a few ground rules, for now i would leave voltages alone and raise the fsb in 10mhz increments, e4500 has a multiplier of 11 and a stock fsb of 200mhz

anyways i got to 2.5ghz and then my memory (its fairly standard geil 800mhz stuff, so i didnt expect any fireworks anyway) started to hold me back.

after messing about with my memory settings i finally got it run in a 2/3 setup at 825mhz with an fsb speed 275 (1100 effective) and a clock of 3.025Ghz

my proc now runs idle at around 27-35 and when i put both cores under load with orthos the temp seems to sit at around 57-62. i tried playing gears of war for around an hour and the temp was 45 when i checked. i should say that i'm using stock cooling, but my case is a well ventilated with three slow running 12cm fans

i tried to push to 3.2 and it wouldnt boot into windows, to be honest though im happy running it at this level as its perfectly stable and fine for my needs. one thing i would like to know is whether my temps are acceptable for my cpu? if i can avoid splashing out on a heatsink i would rather leave it stock.

also, i applied AS5 to my cpu when i built my pc. would it be worth taking off the northbridge heatsink and applying it to that aswell? it seems to be held in by two plastic pins that im sure i could remove easily.

thanks for any help

I now my NB on my DS3L gets pretty hot but I've never heard any body recommend replacing the thermal paste on it. Hopefully somebody pops on and says yea or nea. I know I'll be adding a 40mm fan to the NB soon.

Good job on the OC. If you need more in site into temps and OCing just read the stickies.

I've also got the DS3L, and it's NB gets horribly warm. I've added a 40mm fan, and it - sort of - helps. I'm going to be slapping a waterblock onto it this weekend...

well mine is the P31 model but from what i understand the differences aren't huge.

yeah ive definitely noticed the NB heatsink gets a little toasty. but the system temps are at a steady 35-37 so i'll avoid the whiny 40mm fan (my system is almost silent and i'd like to keep it that way) and crank the cpu down a notch in the summer.

i guess the choice in overclocking is nearly always the noise/speed ratio!

yeah i used to have something similar on my old board, I may well invest in one of those.

questions: if i do buy a NB cooler am i gonna have to use the crappy plastic push pins that gigabyte seem to have used?

VID Count: been reading a lot about this on here recently, my vid is 1.32 and my voltage is currently 1.31. Tried to undervolt to 1.2 last night and wouldnt boot.

certainly not proof that the vid relates to minimum voltage, but another pointer that it may

thanks mate but its a NB cooler im after not cpu :)

Be careful...manufactures sometimes put a sticker on the NB cooler and if removed will void warranty and thats something they can tell...just to warn you.

Theres a Thermaltake one that has a little fan and a heatsink/pipes and looks very good. Another option is the HUGE Thermalright one

thermaltake seems to be the make of choice for nb coolers then!

i'll see what i can get in uk

thanks again all

scan do most cooler from cpu to NB.if you ever buy from ebuyer they dont often restock heatsink of any sort.i saw the Zalman sold out about 2 years ago.everytime i go there they dont have it.they just restock about 30 1 week ago.

you get what i try to say.but ebuyer is the cheapest reputable etailer though!

Sorry about that. The big picture made me think it was for CPU.

ebuyer are indeed very good on price.

you're right about the stock though, its terrible. i think they just concentrate on getting in remote control helicopters and usb christmas trees more than PC hardware!

when was your first time shop or visited them?back 2 years ago they are the best with possibly all the pc hardware on the market!and i just go out and shout about the website(ebuyer).but after it expanded its product range the pc parts are lacking behind on stocks and fresh new parts even though they still have the cheapest prices around.

but if we all make a email to them and complain about the stock and the range they have got.they could change its way that it's heading now.
