AVG Malware?

A good friend of mine told me that AVG has basically become a form of malware. I recently uninstalled it and installed Avira. Ever since I made this move I have been getting the BSOD with the "drivers less than or equal to" error. This seems to mostly happen when I launch steam, but i am unsure as i have multiple programs running usually. So this is more a question about AVG but help on the BSOD matter would be greatly appreciated.
