As with anything, it depends on the price. The 2600XT can be faster then the 8600GT, so at stock settings you should be good. (the 8600GTS is faster, but is more expensive.) I tend to give the nod to the 2600xt over the 8600GT.
I don't know how much you are spending for this, so I can't say if its a good buy. You might be able to buy an x1950pro or a 7600GT for less, making either of them a better buy. Or as Sunny pointed out, you might be better off upgrading your entire system for just a bit more. Without knowing what you have already, or what your options are, its impossible to say what you should do.

Totally agree with above poster. Actually I just adviced a buddy of mine to get a 2600XT for his casual gaming needs, he is getting a PCIe though. It is a great card for the money if you don't expect cutting edge graphics. But let this be the final upgrade to your AGP system plz. for the sake of evolution. ;D
X1950 pro > HD2600XT > 7600GT. If you use fsaa, get the X1950 pro. If you don't use fsaa the HD2600XT is a good option as in many new games it is hanging with the X1950 pro and costs less. Since you are in the USA, look at these two cards:
Forget the 7600GT unless it's much cheaper than the Hd2600XT. It's kinda lame in some new games losing bigtime to the near equal X1650XT and getting crushed by the 2600XT. Also the HD2600XT is often whoopin the 7900GS even (without fsaa).

i don't get it,why would anyone want to upgrade on a dead platform!!!!
AGP is dead!! RIP!!
Lot of people are looking for the easy upgrade to extend the life of their current systems. Those systems still do every thing that they need apart from high resolution gaming. Swapping out a graphics card is alot easier than replacing a whole system.
