am not an avid gamer just want decent graphics.
right now the radeon is hard to get so they have suggested this as an alternative???

I wouldn't go with the GTS, especially at that price.

Wait for a 3870, or see if you can find a Geforce 8800 GT. Should be less than $300, and is better than either option.

I assume you have a PCIe card slot. The AGP slot is getting too old to find cards for now (and the CPU will bottleneck even if you find a fast AGP card)

The 3870 looks much better than the 8800GTS.
Only the 8800GT is better for games. But the 3870 has HDMI and 10.1 so it's more 'future proof'
The 8800GT and 3870 are the only gaming cards in the world that matter now.

If not serious about games, the HD 2600XT or 8600GT is good enough for Sims2, PGA Golf, even Oblivion on mild settings.

WHOA! Missed that part. Like enewmen said - any of these cards are brutal overkill if you're not a game player.

A fine cheap Radeon 2600 XT or 8600 GT is absolutely great for you... and will even be able to play games at 1280x1024 just fine!
