Hey guys... I've been reading a bunch of lapping guides lately and I'm most likely going to take the plunge and lap my E6300 soon... as it stands now at room temp ~52C, according to Intel's TAT and 44C according to nVidia Monitor. However, my BIGGER question is this... I'm going to upgrade my video cards soon, (2)7600GT's in SLI... probably to (2)9600GT's, anyhow... Is it worth it to try and lap my 7600GT's??? Is this an insane question, or is it somewhat logical? (or practical for that matter?) My nVidia monitor shows one 7600GT running @ 49C and the other is @ 52C all at idle.... lapping might help right? Let me know what you think, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :sol:

Hmmm. I have lapped alot of processors and a few heat sinks, but never a vid card. I guess people dont because of the shape, as well as they are made to take more heat than your processor. Unless you plan on OCing them to high heaven, I dont think you'd need to.

Then again. I'd do it if it works! ;)

But I am a bit crazy!

The shape of the card and gpu does pose a challenge, but since I'll be replacing them soon I was just wanting to try and see. I don't plan on OCing them really, but if they run cooler then why the heck not!? Has anyone here attempted a gpu lap before or heard of anyone who has tried? (here come the horror stories) <-hope not... :ouch:

LOL, I'm the one who usually makes the horror stories! Just be careful and safe and I am sure nothing will go wrong. Take pics and all that durring each step, thats always good, and who knows, I may follow in your foot steps on my Ultras!

i dont think you can lap a GPU as the GPU is already been put on the PCB board without a heat spreader so if you do lap it you will just lapping the bare chip which then will cause permanent damage to it.

I'm pretty sure that some GPUs have IHSs, just be careful because some of them are already mirrored. Also, it is very hard to sand a GPU due to the orientation of the chip. Be warned you will likely either scratch the card, reduce performance, or brick the card if you try this. It has been thought of before, thats why you don't hear about it.

Hmm... I really thought there'd be more "positive" feedback... I'm going to take the heatsinks off tonight and have a good look at the gpu's. If they are mirrored, then I shall leave them be, if they are not... I'm going to have some fun! I was planning on covering the pcb with tape or plastic and cut a hole out so the gpu is the only thing showing through, then using sand paper taped to a piece of glass or a small sanding block to do the job. If all goes well, I'll post some pics... If all goes bad... I'll STILL post pics!! haha!! :pt1cable:

...what about lapping just the heatsinks if the gpu's are mirrored already?? :bounce:
