I just got a new HP Media Center PC. It has an AM2 Socket and a AMD X 2 4600. I was thinking about getting something a little faster..possiblly an AMD X 2 5600..can I just get one and pop it in?
It has an AM2 socket...

Check with HP to see if your motherboard will support the processor. Alternatively, find out what type of motherboard you have see what chips it supports (and check for any updates that may allow you to run newer chips).

If it is running an X2 4600+, it should be a simple drop in replacement, I thought, with AM2 based boards.
Maybe a BIOS update or something.

But I am not an AMD user, so do what rgeist554 mentioned, about check manuf. CPU compatibilities for your system.

I am not sure if I can go to a phenom though-I am not sure if the current bios supports the new processor-I could possibly go to a AMD X2 6000.

Wouldn't the increase in speed be about 20%?
