hello there

i am making my own storage case that works as an external enclosure

i already found a suiable case that can house 12 HD ( http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HAPPY-4-PWR&cpc=SCH )

but the problem that i am facing now is how to link all the hds together with a singel or couple sata links
and being able to link them to the coputer with any raid number

i first thought maybe using some kind of multiplier

but then i saw the following already built case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816111050

i was puzzled because i couldnt figure out what kind of linking did they use
or what kind of controller did they use ( you can see the images here )

they even got multiple raid mods in their case

so can some one please guide what do i need exactly do i need to link and be able to use all the harddrives

thanks in advanced all

hey huron
thanks for the replay

the thing is i dont want it to be a pc
i want it as an enclosure only

so i am not after a server and there for not after a motherboard or any thing else

i want it to be as you see in the link in my second post
case + the HDs + Power supply + a controller or something to make work
and of course a fan

You just want it to be a big enclosure for HDDs? I think if you read further down on the list, it may tell you how to make the Media Servers larger (by adding another case - I'm not sure if they put a mobo in it or not).

I'm not sure how to make that work for you. I think it might actually be easier to put a board in there and make it a server, but maybe someone will have an idea.

thanks for the replay once again

what puzzles me the most is that i thought that there must be some kind of chips like this on
http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/ad5sahpm-e.asp

but judging from the following photo

there is no chip
and the case supports raid 1 , 0 , 5

how is that possible ?

The link to the enclosure you posted from NewEgg does have a controller board on it. Can check the pictures they have of it, it's in front of the power supply under the HDD bays. Am guessing that board where drives are connecting control the RAID options of it.

hey there
thanks for the replay

but i guess it's kinda of a power hub to fit all the power

i searched alot and never found a raid controller that works without a MB

any ways
i found the perfect case for the project http://www.coolerguys.com/840556087465.html

but i am considering now going the extra mile and installing a Mother Board along with all the other stuff needed in normal pcs

but i was wondering
what kinda of MB supports about 22 hard drive and what raid controller can do the job ??
