I'm currently in the process of building a new high end unit. unfortunately i know little to nothing about power supplies and appearently all the articles written about them are written in greek(well might as well be greek to me)

at anyrate help a brutha out this is my first build and i don't want my power supply to randomly shut my system down cause its a POS not a PSU.

here are my parts

gigabit p35 motherboard
Pentium core 2 duo e6850
2 sata 7200 HDD's
2 DVD-R's
Nvidia 8800 Gt oc
4 GB ram

I have no idea what kinda of power supply to get. further more i don't know what kind of drain these parts require (i've heard people talk about 5V heavy vs 12v heavy) what should i be looking for in a PSU and does anyone have any recommendations?

Tier 1 if available. Tier 2 units are generally a good fit for your specs.

In this same realm of questions, how much power do you need to run SLi? I'm looking at possibly building a system with a quad core 6600, 4 gigs of ram, and dual 8800gtx's. What's the minimum I need to get? 600w? 700w?

8800's require a minimum 28/29amps on the 12v rail(s). So, it's the amps on the 12v rails you should be concerned with. The total wattage depends more on the total system components the PSU is powering. There are a lot of PSU's in the 600-750w range with quad 18a rails that would work for you, for example

@badge: You're right, that probably will be fine, but remember that the rails don't combine for 18A x 4, it's different on every supply. The OCZ PSU combines to get ~48.3A, whereas the Thermaltake gets a total of 60A.

Seriously? They give the same performance as the GTX's? what kind of prices are we talking?

that's kinda nuts.

About $300-350. It is kinda nuts but read this:
"8800GTX stock has pretty much dried up and is overpriced now. The Ultra is just an absolute sick waste of money and the 3870 really has nothing on the new G92 based variant of the 8800GTS. This means that if you’re looking for a top video card this Christmas the 8800GTS 512MB is probably going to be the card you’re looking at."

Check out the Crysis benchmarks on pg. 18, the new 8800GTS is actually beating the 8800GTX by a little bit!
Keep in mind too that the 8800GT ended up being more than the MSRP, so this card could potentially find itself in the $400 range, but that's still less than the GTX! Also, I really don't think it'll go that high since AMD/ATI has their HD 3870X2 coming out around that price point.
