Just wonderin if i could get some help? I guess im what you would call an average joe when it comes to comp's. I mean i know enough to get by, but that's about it.I built the comp im using now(first time build). Thankfully everything went well, no prbs at all. I did all the hardware install's myself. I did however let a friend who knows a lot about computers to do all the boot up work(bios, Os, and drivers and such). The friend in question is now in Iraq on his 2nd tour, and wont be back for 12 to 15 months. I want to do just a minor overclock on my new E8400(nothing extreme), but im nervous about messin in the bio's myself. My cpu runs at 3 ghz, i want to go up to 3.4 or maybe 3.6 ghz. Is there someone who could list a simple to understand little guide for me on what to adjust in my bios to achieve this? I have did a few minor things in the bio's already like disabling C1E, and Eist to get it run at full 3ghz(stuff i was comfortable doing). Now when it comes to overclocking im a little leary!Just dont understand some of the jargon used when people talk about OCing .So if anyone can maybe give a list in order of what to do i would appreciate it! Here are my system specs{ E8400 core 2,,Ga-p35-ds3L rev. 2 gigabyte mobo,,2 gigs G-Skill ddr2 800 ram,,320 gig seagate Hd,,Samsung dvd burner,,Artic cooling freezer7 heatsink,,8800gts(g92)512 vid card,,Sunbeam transformer case with 5 fans,, Xp pro.} Thanks!

More about : overclock

To do a really basic overclock an to increase your confidence with the BIOS just do a simple FSB increase. I'm not accustomed with your mobo, however it should say summit like FSB or Front Side Bus. I'll generally be on an Auto setting so you need to select Manual and then another drop down should appear below your FSB Auto box.

Simply increase the fsb with either the '-' or '+' button or manually put a figure in. When your comp fails to POST it should attempt to restart but tell you to change your settings ,ie 'unsuccessful overclock'. When that happens you'll prob need to increase the voltage to the cpu abbrev vcore. Watch the temps when doing this and you don't need more than 1.4 vcore
unless you want to run @4.0Ghz+ and have good airflow.

Too be honest you'll prob get to 3.2-3.6 before having to adjust a RAM option. Really the Overclock guides in this forum are very good and save me from typing and repeating :) .

I think the Advanced control on Gigabyte mobo's is Ctrl + F1.

Shadows OC guide should do you very nicely. I just wanted you to know that C1E doesn't really give you any benefit and only needs to be disabled for stability reasons on a large OC.

ok, i pretty much understand the guide until i get down to the (system voltage control,ddr2 overvoltage,pci-e overvoltage, fsb overvoltage and cpu overvoltage?) kinda stuck at that point. Dont know what to set my 8400 at?Or ram i mean.

See what you can do without increasing the voltage. If it is stable at your desired OC then no voltage increase is needed. The lower the voltage the less heat.
