I want to host a small LAN party with some of my friends, and i was wondering if we all needed the game in order to play it. We're obviously going to be connected to a switch, so is it possible for everyone to open up a game from somebody elses computer, so we're not limited to games that we all have (pretty much nothing). And im going to be using a server, but it is a random computer, and it has no games on it, so can i start that up, open up a game from somebody elses computer connected to the network, and start a local server with that?!?!
Another question i had is, how do we officially "connect" to each other's computers when we are all connected to a switch. Do we need to mess with each other's IP adresses, or do we just start a local server and play?
Feel free to anwser any of the questions and thanx in advance Toms hardware, U guys ROCK.
Can you all run the same game off one PC - nearly always no. depends on game and its security and the way the game works, I'd say 99.9% no. Most new games even know when your using the same licence.
how to conect - One of you needs "host" the game, he or she will be the server you conect to, it should be easy to do - have that person start a LAN game, each game will have different options clearly. rest of you then conect to it - this will probably need some firewall settings so that you can all see and conect to eachothers games. Or just disable firewalls if your not sure how to do this and rely on your routr firewall.
You will also need to run a dhcp server, if you don't have a router in the mix. If your not going to have internet access you can set each computer to a static ip - 192.168.0.xxx, subnet 255,255,255,0 and leave the default gateway blank.
Depending on how many people you are going to have you may want to run a gig switch.
