i've got 2gb of ddr 400 memory made by Transcend i.e. 1gb x2.
the latencies are 3-3-3-8
i've got an amd opteron dual core 175 cpu @ 2.2ghz stock.
the motherboard is an Asus A8N-E -nvidia nforce 4 ultra chipset.
the psu is a coolermaster extreme power duo 600watts
wht are the best latencies i can get out of my ram for maximum performance?

Well if the default timings are 3-3-3-8 then dont change them and OC your CPU, if it was stable then keep those timings or lower them a bit, but if the OC wasnt stable, then u have to raise them

I would raise the memory timing to 4-4-4-12. Then OC the CPU. Find an AMD OC guide - google something like "overclocking opteron".

Use Prime95 to test for stability. When you have pushed the CPU as far as you can/want, start lowering the memory timing one step at a time.

Test with Prime95. When you think that you have gone as far as you can, run Prime95 for 24 hours. If it crashes, relax the memory timings.

How much do you expect to gain?

Let me tell my experience when I built Box #1. My default memory timing was 5-5-5-15-2t. I got the E6600 OC'd to 3.3 GHz (266 MHz FSB to 367 MHz) at reasonable temps and voltage using an AC Freezer 7 Pro HSF. I ran memory benchmarks. After a few days of testing, I got the mem timing down to 3-3-3-7-1T. It had crashed after 18 hours at 3-3-3-6-1t. More benchmarks. Once I had finished, mem i/o increased 6%. Half of the gain was from going from -2T to -1T.

6% is noticeable only in benchmarks.

Currently, the box almost runs at 3-4-4-10. Prime 95 crashed at 15 hours.

wht would be better timings like 2/2.5-3-3-8 or higher?
my pc crashes @ 2-3-3-8 the bios had to be reset to reboot into windows.

Under these conditions, if your pc crashes, you need to increase the numbers. I would try 4-4-4-10. If it doesn't crash, start lowering each number by one.
