Hi all

My old Computer has just died on me (pentium 4 skt 478)
and i've just set up a new rig and overclocked it, now seeing how i'm pretty much outdated in the computer world i just wanted to get a second opinion on the voltages i'm running on the CPU
at the moment i've go a X3360 @ 3.75ghz running @1.296 (thats what CPU-Z says) just wanted to know if this is too much or if this is fine to run on an everyday basis.
Heres my system specs

CPU: X3360 Xeon @3.75ghz @ 1.296
MOBO: Asus Rampage Formula
Ram: 2gb Corsair Dominator DDR2 @1128 @1.22v @5-5-5-12
Video Card: HD2900xt Crossfire (got them as a hand me down from 2 friends so don't flame me)
PSU: Silverstone Strider 850 watt
Cooling: Asetek Xternal Watercooling cpu only (taken from the old P4)
Case: Lian Li PC-A10B (I find the case simple and clean)

I pretty much read through the forums to pick most of my parts out but as for the cpu i actualy ordered a Xeon 3350 (Q9450) but Auspcmarket.com.au sent me the wrong one (their loss is my gain)
any otehr hints and tricks regarding settings would be greatly appreciated as i really am out of date

Thanks

No the bios setting is not the actual reading due to vdrop/vdroop and .1-.3v difference is also wrong as anything over .1v would be excessive. Try .01-.03v.

Thanks heaps for the fast replies, i've atleast got a guideline to go by
After some thinking and advise from some friends, I've decided to lower the clockspeed down to 3.6ghz @1.25 as a voltage
I guess i got hit buy the power bug of getting a new computer and trying to beat my old comp as much as i could...

Just a general Question though at these settings (1.25v) do you guys think that the cpu would last about another 3-5 years with everyday general use ?
I don't plan to upgrade anything else apart from maybe the waterblock (Asetek Antarctica) as it's getting kinda old been about 3 years now

Again Thanks in advance and i would appreciate any other tips of the trade

I'm pissed now...... I may return my X3350 for another, even tho I have a super low VID, it is stuck at 3.4. I even put as much as 1.45v into it and it wouldn't load windows at 3.6.

Grrrrr.

Good luck with that. It runs fine stock. They will test it and send it back to you.

its hard to get any sarcasm and jokes across in forums!!!i had it like this loads of time!!!haha

you shouldnt worry about temp or voltage when running on stock.if its idling at 30-40(max) it means your heatsink is working(seated well).good luck in your OC!!!

My mobo is fine. It ran the 6750 at 3.6 no problem, I even got it to load Vista at 3.8. That was a much higher FSB than I'm tryin to push with the Xeon.

I use 4x1 RAM setup, so that could be working against me. I never said I wasn't happy about 3.4 :p I just hate the fact that I had to get the damn lemon :) I never said it was defective. It works just fine. I had just hoped to get 3.6 easily and have 3.8 be the "challenging" OC.

Aside from not getting 3.6, it seems I'm hitting thermal limits around 3.4 as well. TRUE has been reseated a few times just to make sure, but always pretty consistent. For such a low VID it took relatively high voltage to get 3.4 even. VID is 1.0500 and it took (CPU-z idle) 1.296 to get 3.4 24 hour Prime stable. ~1.26v under load.
