I just got my XFX 8800GTX Extreme and believe it runs too hot...
At idle, the temps are 72C average. My 8800GTX runs at just 50C at idle.
Is that 72C ok or is something wrong with the card?
If I set the fan to 100%, it goes down to 70C.
- If you have a 8800 GTX that runs at 50C you should just be able to OC it to the same speed as your new 'extreme' card and it will probably still be less than 72C and you will save yourself a lot of money in the process.
- 72C does sound very hot, if its still within warranty and wont cost you anything I would swap it for a new one.
p.s. I am assuming you mean 'extreme' as a 8800GTX OC edition not a '8800 Ultra'.

That is to hot, a 2 degree drop is not very much??? Something is amiss. What are the GPU and GPU memory speeds o f the Extreme? They can't be that extreme because you say its still a GTX and not the ultra. You will have to manually OC set both the cards with some tool like Rivatuner to the highest stable speed the slower card can handle if you SLI them together. Otherwise the both default to the slower cards speed. Individually there is no problem.
Just an ordinary case, 20cm fan intake on front, intake on side, exhaust on back, PSU with 3 fans, all exhaust.
Room is 26 (tropical climate, aircon), Q6600 with zalman cooler.
I had before a 8800gts, which was about 50c. The 8800GTZ Extreme is factory overclocked too 600/1900. I did not further overclock.
Yes it's normal, I have a XFX ultra extreme. 650 core, 1605 shader, And 1107 mem. Runs 58 c when idle and 71 when loaded. Make sure to put an exhauster in an open pci slot under the card and a fan blowing at the front or intake, Makes a big difference. You will see that there are vents on the bottom that can draw even more heat out of the card than just dumping it back in the case. Keeping the air moving under the video card will help.
Obie is right pick up one of these and put it under the vid card.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835200018 I put one under my 8800gtx and the temps came down 18 - 23C.
When ordering pay attention to where the fan inlet is so that it is towards the card.
There is another card on newegg that is reverse of this one and will pull air from under the fan and not from under the vid card.
Its the best $8 I ever spent
