Hi all,

I need a new hard drive for my Dell Dimension 4600 (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/specs.htm#1105813 ). Is it correct that it supports SATA2? Would I need to update the BIOS or is there anything else I should be aware of? Is there a maximum limit to the hard drive/partition it would recognise?

I’m thinking about the Samsung HD753LJ 750GB hard drive. I don’t think this Dell has any SATA power connectors, so has this drive got a molex connector? If not, is there an adapter I can get for it?

If not this drive, any compatible recommendations?

Many thanks! :)

I just added a 640GB Western digital (SATA drive) partitioned into two 320BB drives in my 4600. I am guessing your mobo to be the same as mine and it should have two SATA connectors on it. As far as your power supply cables having connectors for SATA, I highly doubt it. You will need a SATA power adapter like the one found here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812104652 . Also you will need a SATA cable like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812106201 . As far as SATA2, I am not familiar with those so I could not tell you if Dell supports those. If you do go to a SATA drive, you will need to go into the bios to set the correct type of drive if you change or add a SATA drive. I currently now have two IDE ( a 200GB and a 40GB) and one SATA (640GB)drives in my case. It is amazing what tie straps can do when you run out of room in a 4600 case.
