Building a Gaming cpu, tell me what you think!!!!!!!

Hey guys,

Well I am building a new gaming rig and im not sure what to get. Originally I built an AMD rig, but then looked at different reviews and talked to different people, and they all said I should go with intel. So i build this. Let me know what you think, I wanna keep it below $1,500.

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s (

EVGA 122-CK-NF67-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

EVGA 512-P3-N805-A1 GeForce 8800GT KO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Card

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 620W Power Supply

CPU Cooling
Thermaltake CL-P0114 120mm CPU Cooler

Any suggestions? I still cant decide if I should get this or go with the AMD Phenom Quad? What do you think?

  1. No Need for DDR2-1066 RAM.
    DDR2-800 will let you OC that Chip to 3.6Ghz, though you may only be able to hit 3.4Ghz due to temp limits. Depends on the chip.

    Why on earth a Phenom?
    It's slower per clock and will run about 1.0Ghz slower due to all of the current L3 Cache issues.

    Maybe AMD will get it fixed sometime next year, but right now I would not touch a Phenom unilt they get the L3 cache issue fixed.

    However, I would not hold my breath on that one.
    From what I have read, it's been a long know issue and they have not fixed it yet and the primary reason they have continually dialed back the clock speeds.
  2. You can get the KO if you want, I got the eVGA 8800GT SC and OC'd it up to SSC similar spec and It works just fine. All the coolers on all the eVGA GT's are all the same and are rated for 100C.

    RivaTuner 2.06 (Got it to work with new 169.12 Beta Display Driver)
    My 8800GT SC OC (Stock tops at 91C)

    Clock: 650 -> 701
    Shader: 1625 -> 1752
    memory: 950 -> 950 (Didn't need to change)

    To keep it cool enough I had to up the fan speed to 75% and it tops at 71C
