My Sony DRU 840A DVD writer is acting funny. It's supposed to read and write dvd's, and it reads fine, but today I tried to burn a DVD and when I put it in nothing happened. In My Computer the drive went from "DVD-RAM Drive (E: )" to "CD-Drive (E: )" when I put a DVD +R in. According to the Sony website it's compatible with DVD-R/-R DL/-RW, DVD+R/DVD+R DL/+RW DVD-RAM: DVD-ROM, DVD-Video CD: CD-DA, CD-ROM (XA), CD Extra, Video CD, Photo

But when I put in a DVD +R it doesn't recognize it as a DVD... or a CD at all.

It has driver version: 5.1.2535.0

I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Any possible ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks muchly. :)

Direct from the Storage by Sony support site:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/node/7182

* Ensure the Sony drive is set as a secondary master by itself. If you have another disc burner or a zip drive on the same IDE cable, please separate them.

* Ensure you have the latest Service pack for your Windows operating system and any other updates for your system installed.

* Please remove your secondary IDE channel from the Device Manager. To do this:
1. Right click on My Computer and then left click on properties.
2. Choose hardware tab.
3. Select Device Manager.
4. Click on the + in front of IDE/ATAPI controller.
5. Right click on secondary IDE and then choose uninstall.
6. Restart your computer.
