Hi
I have a hard drive that dosent want to work with windows anymore.
When i boot my computer with windows it freezes after the loading screen and restarts after about 5-10 min.
But when i boot with ubuntu from a live CD it works. And i can see all the files.
It's a Western Digital Caviar 500GB about 1 year old.

Down-load and run the HD manufacturers drive test tool (or Ultimate Boot CD) and see what it says.

I would copy the files off, before you do any testing or booting to the drive, or you will loose them.

The WD6400AAKS is fast and relatively cheap.

I would buy it and load windows with only that drive installed. Then I would put the old drive in as a second drive and copy off the needed files.

If you can't get the files off you could use SpinRite hard drive data recovery software.

But it's the second drive, i already have windows on another drive. I dont care about the files i just want it to work. I have tried it in another computer. And when it's connected the computer freezes after the boot screen. Just like in mine.

Then the drive is shot, RMA it or throw it away.

What PSU are you using? A junk PSU can eat drives.

Turn SMART on in the BIOS. You can also download SpeedFan and click on the SMART tab.

Also there are drive tools on Western Digital's site that will test the drive.

I fixed it by myself. I used a HDD eraser that came with Ultimate Boot CD.
So thanks for the help MrLinux

Oh, you were talking about booting to windows. I should have read more closely. It's not likely that a drive will boot in a different computer anyway.

A format should have fixed that. Zero writing a drive is a good idea anyway, IMO.
