PCIe connector terms

I am trying to figure out if 2x4pins, 6+2pins, or 8pins connectors are the same things. I have been searching on newegg for future system purchase and the spec of 2900gt says 2x4, and none of the power supplies list on their specs 2x4 but instead 6+2pins or 8pins. Thanks in advance...

2900gt uses an 8 pin 12v PCIE power connector from the PSU. You can buy a later model PSU that supplies the needed '8 pin PCIE' connectors. If your PSU is of the older varieties, like most are, you will have a '6 pin PCIE' connector. Pluging a 6 pin PCIE connector into the card will work, but you might want to buy a 6 pin t 8 pin PCIE adapter like this. The extra 2 pins are ground wires.

2x4, 6+2 and 8 pin are all the same thing, 2x 4 implies 2 rows of 4 pins, 6+2 implies a 6pin plus the extra 2 pins detachable for legacy and 8 pin is a full plug, 2x4 is generally also fullplug but meh
