Virus!!!!!!

My buddy got a virus that displays blue smiley faces. The faces change color. He can't boot up and he only gets that smiley face. He runs the latest AVG edition. I think it is a Trojan and i am hearing rumors that this virus got into the motherboard. Is that even possible? I told him to clear the CMOS.

Has anyone heard of a thing like this?

Tell him to scan his PC with Malwarebytes' in safe mode.
